It depends on what you plan on doing with the HDTV.
1. If you are going to watch HD cable or HD satellite get a 720p set, in the USA nothing is transmitted in 1080p and will not be for a while.
2. If you want to watch Blue-Ray and get the best possible picture you may want to get a 1080p, you may not see the difference between 720p and 1080p at that size HDTV, so if you’re not sitting real close you may still want to save the money and get a 720p HDTV.
3. Panasonic and Samsung are top rated. Also Sony, LG are good brands. I’d stick with a name brand though, you get what you pay for. I personally like them in this order Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, LG, everyone else.

Go all the way you wont be happy otherwise,
SONY XBR4 with the 120hz refresh rate and the 1080i the picture is perfect ! you will have no complaints at all.

depends how much ur willing to spend.
but a good quality 720p is better than a cheap 1080p.

1080 has a better resolution than 720. Although you may not notice the difference in that screen size(40in) but you should consider future technology requirements, may demand 1080 resolution. Buy a 1080 if its ok with your budget.
